New 2016 GMC Acadia

2016 GMC Acadia Overview

  • Three-row crossover with seating for seven or eight
  • Shares a platform with the Chevrolet Traverse
  • New Wi-Fi hotspot capability via a 4G LTE connection
The 2016 GMC Acadia is a three-row crossover with flexible seating and cargo options, and for those who want brash luxury, a Denali version.

For 2016, the Acadia doesn’t see many changes but does add new technology with Wi-Fi hotspot capability. The service is run through GM’s OnStar suite of connected technology and utilizes a 4G LTE connection to turn the Acadia into a rolling wireless modem so occupants can use tablets or laptops on the go. Each Acadia comes with a 3-month/3 GB trial of the service, which can then be continued on a subscription basis.

The Acadia is stylish without being loud, except for the Denali which ups the ante when it comes to brash styling. Up front, a three-bar grille and sharp creases on the hood give the Acadia a more rugged appearance. The back gets its own distinctive features, including blacked out D-pillars which blend into the rear glass and make the rear part of the roof appear to be floating. The aforementioned Denali trim adds extra trim pieces that include a large chrome grille, as well as a panoramic sunroof.

Under the hood, a 286-hp, 3.6-liter V-6 that makes 270 pounds-feet of torque is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, but those looking for more traction can opt for an all-wheel drive setup. Fuel economy figures check in at 17/24 mpg city/highway for FWD models (16/23 mpg for AWD models).

Inside, there are two second row seating configuration options: a pair of captain’s chairs or a second row bench which expands capacity to eight. With 24.1 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row as well as a covered storage well, the Acadia also offers plenty of luggage space for trips and other excursions. Standard interior features include front/rear air conditioning, Bluetooth connectivity, stereo with 6.5-inch touch screen, USB/iPod port, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls. GM’s IntelliLink system is optional, as are leather upholstery, heated/cooled front seats, navigation system, and a rear-seat entertainment system.

The 2016 Acadia performed well on crash tests, earning a full five-star overall rating from the NHTSA. A backup camera is standard, as are blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic systems which are especially helpful when driving a larger vehicle, such as this. The Acadia was also among the first vehicles to get a front center air bag option, which deploys between the front passengers to keep them from colliding in an accident.
