New 2016 Hyundai Veloster

2016 Hyundai Veloster Overview

  • Unique three-door design
  • Gets exterior styling, powertrain, and technology updates for 2016
  • New Rally Edition also available (only 1,200 vehicles being made)
The funky 2016 Hyundai Veloster returns with some styling and technology updates for the new model year, along with another limited edition trim: the Rally Edition.

Up front, the hood has been altered and no longer features the faux-hood scoops seen last year. There are also slight alterations to the grille and new 17-inch wheels. The Veloster keeps its interesting shape and appearance, with a three-door setup and low, downward-sloping roofline. The third-door is found on the passenger side, and pops open after the front door is opened for easier access to the rear seats.  Rally Edition models add fake carbon-fiber accents and Matte Blue paint, along with 18-inch alloy wheels.

Under the hood, the Veloster’s two engine options carry over from 2015. The base engine is a 138-hp 1.6-liter four-cylinder shared with the Accent. It is mated to a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. The more intriguing option is found in Turbo and Turbo R-Spec models, a 201-hp, turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder making 195 pounds-feet of torque. Turbo models get a new transmission option, a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic with paddle shifters. Both Turbo and Turbo R-Spec models get a six-speed manual standard, with the Turbo R-Spec’s version being a B&M short-shifter which offers quicker gear changes. Rally Edition models use the turbo drivetrain, but get unique suspension tuning that makes it sportier.

Inside, a sharply angled dashboard houses a seven-inch touchscreen display that controls the audio system. For 2016, the Veloster gets the new Blue Link 2 telematics system and adds Siri Eyes Free app integration with voice command recognition. Standard features include Bluetooth connectivity, USB/iPod port, power windows and locks, and Pandora internet radio streaming through a supported smart phone. Push-button start, a navigation system, and leather upholstery are optional. Turbo models also get unique stitching and embroidered “Turbo” logos in the seats, as well as heated front seats and a premium stereo.

Standard safety features include a rearview camera, six airbags, antilock brakes, and an electronic stability system.
